Florida citizens have the right to propose amendments to the Florida Constitution through an initiative petition process. The Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections verifies thousands of initiative petitions, signed by Sarasota County voters, each year. Sponsors of initiatives must secure the required number of valid signatures for their initiatives to be placed on a general election ballot.
Pursuant to Florida Statute 100.371(11)(b), Sarasota County's actual cost of signature verification is $0.50 per initiative petition.
More information on Florida's petition process including a list of current initiatives, can be found on the Florida Department of State's Constitutional Amendments/Initiatives website.
